The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to register and vote by requiring strict proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, and other documents. Many Americans lack these documents, can not easily or quickly obtain them, and cannot afford the fees for processing such documentation. The SAVE Act is a modern-day poll tax, and it is unnecessary and immoral. There is virtually no election fraud in our voting system, a minuscule number of people vote more than once—a tiny risk compared to a major obstacle to voting.
Extremist lawmakers are championing the SAVE Act and corralling supportive votes on this anti-voter law designed to make it harder to register and vote. The U.S. State Department estimates that a whopping 46.9% of American Citizens did not have a valid passport in FY 2024.
The legislative branch has a constitutional responsibility to safeguard free and fair elections and ensure all American citizens can freely, securely, and easily exercise their right to vote. The SAVE Act would undermine easy access, making our elections less free and less fair.
Our American democracy works best when all people can have influence and share decision-making power. Requiring every voter to provide a passport or birth certificate in person to register or update their voter information would impact all of us. Still, it would significantly threaten the ability to vote for working-class Americans, older voters, people who’ve changed their last name, and those who’ve lost essential documents due to natural disasters. Voting is how we use the power of our communities to ensure we can all benefit from our democracy.
Despite its name, the SAVE Act does not protect or safeguard elections; it restricts access and reduces participation rates.
We will continue to urge Congress to pass federal voting rights legislation and ensure our democracy works for all. Although we may not be able to do that in the 119th Congress, we won’t give up the persuasion campaign.
In the meantime, tell your representative in the House to preserve easy access to the vote, and do so by voting NO on the SAVE Act
UU Grounding
As of General Assembly 2024, as Unitarian Universalists, we have agreed to “adopt new language on core religious values.” We agree love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values. The values we share include all the following, which we hold as inseparable and deeply interconnected: Interdependence, Pluralism, Justice, Transformation, Generosity, and Equity. (Read more on the Article II revision process.)
With these agreed core religious values in mind, we also ground our call to preserve easy access to the vote in support of a healthy democracy in the following Unitarian Universalist Statements:
Tell your House member to preserve easy access to the vote!
The federal government should not get in the way of our ability to vote.
