Our 5th UU Principle, “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large” compels us to advocate for a healthy inclusive democratic process.
This Action of Immediate Witness calls on us to work in partnership toward theologically-grounded understanding and meaningful action on democracy matters -- eliminating voter suppression, restoring the right to vote to formerly incarcerated returning citizens, ensuring fair districts, protecting the right of protest, demanding transparency with respect to money in politics, supporting D.C. statehood, and more.
Support S.1, For the People Act
Over the past many years, we've watched as faith in our democracy and the power of the American people have been abused and diminished. On January 6th, 2021, we witnessed the shameful culmination of this with a siege on the very halls of our democracy. If that wasn’t enough, many states around the country have enacted new laws with provisions that make it harder for Americans to vote.
If passed S.1 will:
- Make it easier for all citizens to vote;
- End gerrymandering so that electoral districts are fairly drawn;
- Reduce the impact of big money in politics; and
- Hold government officials accountable with new ethics standards.
John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act responds to current conditions in voting today by restoring the full protections of the original, bipartisan Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was last reauthorized by Congress in 2006 but gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013, and further limited in 2021. Since 2013 a number of states have passed sweeping voter suppression laws that disproportionately prevent minorities, the elderly, and the youth from voting. This bill provides the tools to address these discriminatory practices before they become state laws, and seeks to protect all Americans’ right to vote.
S.51 Washington, D.C. Admission Act
Washington, D.C. has a population greater than Vermont and Wyoming, and its residents have been systematically disenfranchised for generations through insufficient and inadequate representation in Congress, and particularly in the Senate. This is a glaring civil rights and voting rights violation of the 700,000 D.C. residents who fulfill all obligations of U.S. citizenship but are denied any representation in the Senate. The U.S. is the only democracy that bars residents of its capital city from full and proper representation in its national legislature, a travesty justified recurrently on the basis of race. This bill provides for admission into the United States of the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth, composed of most of the territory of the District of Columbia.
