The comprehensive immigration reform legislation sent by President Biden to Congress (US Citizenship Act of 2021) has not progressed, for lack of sufficient political support. However, pieces of that act – specifically legal pathways to citizenship for Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and for farmworkers are currently in committee in the Senate.
Please ask your Senators to support the Senate versions (or thank them if they already have joined in sponsoring these): S.264 – DREAM Act (sponsors Durbin and Graham), S.306 SECURE Act (for TPS holders – sponsors Van Hollen and Cardin) and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act sent to the Senate as (H.R.1603), received, read and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.
While the piecemeal approach is not ideal, good progress can be made if sufficient bipartisan support can be generated for these three bills in the Senate. UUSJ encourages you to contact your Senator and urge Judiciary Committee approval and passage in the Senate of these three bills.
The DREAM Act would protect 700,000 DACA persons and more of the 2.3 million Dreamers who were brought to the US as children, the SECURE Act would help almost 400,000 TPS and DED (Deferred Enforced Departure applying to Liberians) secure permanent legal status in the US. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act provides a compromise solution to grant a pathway to citizenship for undocumented farmworkers who work hard providing much of the food we eat
