Tell the Senate to Support

S.1 - For the People Act of 2021

We need to restore our faith in representative democracy and know that our elected officials are working for us. Please join with Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice and our allies in the Faithful Democracy community of organizations and congregations in calling for support of S.1 - For the People Act of 2021. Senate bill S.1 is a comprehensive reform bill that targets the issues that have threatened our democracy.

UUSJ and Faithful Democracy believe, if passed, the For the People Act would:

• Make it easier for all citizens to vote;
• Offer new protections for voters;
• End gerrymandering so that electoral districts are fairly drawn;
• Reduce the impact of big money in politics; and
• Hold government officials accountable with new ethics standards.

Over the past many years, we've watched as faith in our democracy and the power of the American people have been abused and diminished. On January 6th, 2021, we witnessed the shameful culmination of this with a siege on the very halls of our democracy. If that wasn’t enough, more than half the state legislatures throughout the country are now working to pass new laws to suppress the vote. This must be stopped and S.1 can do that.

Our 5th Principle, “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large” compels us to advocate for a healthy inclusive democratic process.

We ask you to:

1. Call and leave your senators a message of support for S.1,  AND
2. Send an email message to your senators using our Action Alert form to the right

Let them feel the public pressure of our principled concern in support of S.1!

"Hello, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [TOWN]. I attend [CONGREGATION].

I am deeply concerned about the state of our democracy. It is critically important that the Senate pass S.1 - For the People Act that will make it easier for all citizens to vote, restore voting rights, end gerrymandering, reduce the impact of big money in politics, and hold government officials accountable.

According to a recent survey by Data for Progress, this bill is supported by 78% of Democrats, 68% of Independents and 57% of Republicans. Overall, only 16% of Americans oppose it. It is truly a bill for the people.

The choice now is for Congress to recognize this moment for what it is: an opportunity to enact transformative legislation that builds up a democracy accessible to all of its citizens. Now is the time to repudiate the politics of exclusion, hatred, and oppression. This is the time to show the moral courage to save our democracy and pass the For the People Act.

I, therefore, urge you to support, co-sponsor, and take a leadership role with S.1 - For the People Act of 2021.
