After the failed Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act vote of January 19th, 2022, attention in the Senate is flowing towards an effort to modernize or overhaul the Electoral Count Act (ECA). And it has the green shoots of bipartisan collaboration among at least 15 Senators, according to NYT reporting. What remains to be seen is will it address any of the substantive dysfunction and inequity the prior efforts sought to address? Will it wrestle with the interconnected whole or complexity?
As Senators look at this prospect, they must look closely at what elements from the previous bill can be included in the new effort, in particular, elements from the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4). Advocates are beginning to refer to this as ECA-Plus.
Please join with Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice in underscoring for the Senate that the right to vote is fundamental to our lives as U.S. citizens and voting should be easy to do for everyone. Gerrymandering and dark money corrupt our democracy and need to be eliminated. We must have legislation at the federal level to ensure that all 50 states are following a fair and unbiased election process. They must contend with these issues as they look at ECA.
Grounding: Our 5th UU Principle, “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large” compels us to advocate for a healthy inclusive democratic process.
Let them know we care and we are watching!
