Tell Congress, No War With Iran! No Regime Change or Air Strikes!

President Trump’s unauthorized attack on Iran and the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is another dangerous action

President Trump has once again moved with speed toward violent regime change, now in Iran, without proper authorization from Congress. This is immoral and unlawful.

Following the United States and Israeli air strikes against Iran, we say no to war with Iran. Stop the strikes! The U.S. must prioritize de-escalation and diplomacy. Only Congress has the power to authorize the use of military forces under Article I of the Constitution.

Few in the world approve of Iran's party in power, its functional Theocracy. As proponents of religious pluralism and democratic process, we reject state coercion, especially in religious and spiritual matters. And we recognize the relief many Iranians, especially in the diaspora, have expressed at the end of the Supreme Leader's reign. Yet, no U.S. president has the authority to use military force against another nation without the approval of Congress. Congress must reassert its war powers. It did so in 2020 on a bipartisan basis following similar strikes that killed Iranian military officers.

Urge your Senators and Representative in the House to stop the war and consider the Iran War Powers Resolution (S.J.Res.104 & H.Con. Res. 38).

The people of the U.S. do not want endless war and have been rejecting the President's domestic agenda. Now they are concerned about the ever-changing basis and rationale for this military action, as well as the lack of Congressional approval. This is as much about distraction as it is about executive overreach. We want diplomacy, not violence and unlawful executive activity, or presidential unilateralism.

Unitarian Universalists have long opposed any intervention into Iran by the U.S. military. Our faith tradition upholds humanitarian goals of protecting innocent life and global human rights, and has done so again in response to this action and the renewed conflict. Subject: No war with Iran. No Airs Strikes. Assert War Powers.

Message:

The U.S. and Israeli air strikes in Iran must not continue. Congress must assert its War Powers. As a constituent and a person of faith, I write with profound concern regarding the attacks by the U.S. military in Iran on February 28th. I urge you to consider measures such as the Iran War Powers Resolution (S.J.Res.104 / H.Con.Res.38). War against Iran is unwise: it does not serve our U.S. interests, nor the regular people of Iran. We are always at our best and most potent when exercising our soft power through diplomacy, commerce, culture, and finance. Hundreds of lives have been lost, and furthering this war could risk long-term and costly entanglements as well as lives and resources. Congress did not authorize a war with Iran nor any related military actions. An attack on Iran initiated by the White House undermines the constitutional role of Congress. This is not acceptable. The administration cannot be allowed to ignore Congressional authority. I urge you to condemn the initial strikes and oppose continued U.S. military action against Iran. This circumstance requires moral courage and strategic clarity, rather than tactical and operational short-sightedness. It may be a pivotal juncture: near-term actions that open long-term risks. As such, it requires interaction with and consent by Congress. Reject this executive overreach! I oppose war with Iran. Yet I support the system of checks and balances and the roles assigned to each branch under the Constitution. No branch is permitted unchecked power. Again, I urge you to consider measures such as the Iran War Powers Resolution (S.J.Res.104 / H.Con.Res. 38) and prioritize diplomacy over coercion or regime change through military action. Vote no on war with Iran.
