It has been over 30 years since Congress passed a law to reform the country’s immigration system and adjust the status of undocumented immigrants in the country. As a result, millions of hardworking families have lived in the shadows while contributing to our economy, communities, and many others have languished in detention just because they tried to seek asylum here
Senator Menendez (D-NJ) and Rep. Sanchez (D-CA) have introduced a groundbreaking immigration reform proposal from President Biden, the US Citizenship Act of 2021. While not perfect, the plan is an important step forward. It would address key areas that have been ignored for decades, such as creating pathways to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US, expediting those with DACA and TPS status as well as farmworkers. It also would improve the family reunification process and aid employment of immigrants by reducing backlogs in visas and immigration courts. It seeks to address root causes of migration such as violence, corruption and poverty in Central America.
As UUs who believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all people, and in justice, equity and compassion in human relations, we strongly support the thrust of the proposed comprehensive immigration reform bill. Make your voice heard. Urge Congress to support the US Citizenship Act of 2021. We have sought a just and equitable reform of our nation’s immigration laws for years and we must grasp this opportunity to urge prompt action to alleviate the suffering and uncertainty for millions of immigrants and asylum-seekers. At UUSJ, we believe no human being is illegal.
Let’s overhaul the U.S. immigration system together. Send an email to your legislators today and tell them you support just and compassionate immigration reforms.
Thank you for taking action!

Sub: Support and Pass the US Citizenship Act of 2021
I’m a Unitarian Universalist and a supporter of the Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice.
As your constituent and someone who stands in solidarity with immigrants, I urge you to support the US Citizenship Act of 2021. I support many of the reforms proposed, including reuniting families that have been separated by visa backlogs, providing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients an opportunity to obtain citizenship quickly, and providing other eligible undocumented immigrants, many of whom have been bravely working during this pandemic and contributing to our society, a pathway to citizenship. I believe the US should return to being a model of acceptance for the asylum-seekers fleeing disasters, violence and poverty.
Our Unitarian Universalist faith principles call us to promote justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, as well as the inherent worth and dignity of every person. In line with those principles, I believe it is long overdue that Congress work together to pass a law to reform the country’s immigration system and adjust the status of undocumented immigrants in the country. I believe the US Citizenship Act of 2021 is a concerted step in this direction.
I urge you to advocate for these changes to our immigration system and adopt an approach that centers human dignity and respect. Please support the US Citizenship Act of 2021 as an important first step and encourage your colleagues to do the same.
Sincerely,
