We must urge the U.S. Congress to prioritize people and protect critical anti-poverty programs like SNAP.
The Farm Bill is one of the most important pieces of legislation that Congress regularly reauthorizes, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a vital part of the Farm Bill. Through the SNAP program, Congress has the ability to combat hunger by strengthening essential programs; removing barriers to access for struggling individuals and families; and increasing access to affordable, nutritious foods to support good nutrition and health.
False narratives and policies about low-income people are strong in our Federal policies. These false beliefs include the belief that people are lazy and need to work more, the mistaken belief that people get what they deserve, or the belief that poverty is the individual's fault.
Protecting SNAP is crucial to protecting short- and long-term health, education, and employment outcomes for children and families. SNAP needs to be a positive program that works for those who need it.
We need Congress to provide marginalized populations better access to SNAP by removing overly restrictive elements such as work requirements, immigrant bans, and time limits for adults without dependents.
