Tell Congress, No Venezuela Regime Change or War and Military Strikes
President Trump’s unauthorized attack on Venezuela and arrest of President Maduro is a dangerous and deeply troubling precedent
President Trump has moved concertedly for violent regime change in Venezuela without proper authorization from Congress. His actions are based on a frail claim of a new “armed conflict” with “narco-traffickers,” and a flimsy assertion of "narco-terrorism."
Since September 2025, the administration has attacked multiple boats (26) in the Caribbean and the Pacific, killing at least 100 people. Now, they are actively seeking to install political surrogates and fossil fuel corporate supporters as part of a long-standing and deplorable pattern of U.S. neo-colonialism in Latin America.
We must oppose this action. We must urge Congress to declare that the U.S. should not be at war with Venezuela absent an explicit congressional authorization. Congress must advance various War Powers Resolutions in reply to this legal and moral transgression by the Executive.
Congress did not declare war. Americans do not want war. The people of Venezuela do not want war. Neither do their neighbors in the Caribbean and Latin America. We would object to U.S. aggression toward Venezuela even if Congress had agreed. UUSJ opposes neocolonial behavior and policies on moral grounds.
"In the actions by President Trump and his administration, we see a belief that ‘might makes right,’ a ‘mandate to meddle,’ a gateway to ‘ceaseless intervention,’ and the glimmers of ‘endless war.’" (See the statement by UUSJ)
Congress must side with our constitution, diplomacy, and peace: require the Executive to abide by the law. They must reassert their power of the purse and oversight, and recalibrate back toward the carefully wrought distribution of powers woven into our Constitution.
Email Congress in advance of expected votes.
